How to Huddle like Vince Lombardi and Create Explosive Business Growth

vince_lombardiIt’s down to the wire and you need to make this play to win. The championship is on the line, and nobody knows how to pull it off.

Enter Vince Lombardi.

How do you suppose the huddle would change if he stuck his head right in the middle of it all? The team would get focused and rise to a level of performance never before seen in history.

If you played for Vince Lombardi, you never missed a practice, a meeting or a drill. He was always there pushing you to be your very best. Because of his approach, the Green Bay Packers dominated the 60s.

You are the Vince Lombardi of your business. Nobody can fill that role better than you.

In this post, we’re going to talk about focusing your business team with a daily huddle and empowering them to become the very best.

Get In. Get Knowledgeable. Create Explosive Business Growth.

At Ignite Spot, we hold two meetings every day. One is at 9 a.m. and the other one is at 3 p.m. We call them Huddles and we treat them the same way Vince would have back in the day.

There are four rules to our huddles:

  1. The meeting only lasts 10 minutes
  2. Everyone must attend
  3. Everyone must stand up
  4. Everyone must participate

Something magical happens during these huddles. Just like a football team regrouping to review the plan, our team steps out of the forest to survey the land. The biggest benefit is communication. Sure we get to talk about crazy stuff, but mostly we talk about current needs and achievements.

ACTION ITEM: Set a specific time for your huddle. You don’t need to have two a day, but do one at least daily.

No Questions = No Profits

During the huddle, your team is going to open up. The goal is to develop a mentality of business growth so you want their input. They’ll have questions about how to complete a task, support a customer, or respond to an email. The best part is that as you answer them, your whole team gets training, and you’re building replications of yourself.

You’re the top commodity in your company. If you can spend time with your team in the huddle, they’ll learn to act like you, respond like you and work like you. It’s the first step towards getting you out of the business so that you can work on it and not in it.

If you don’t communicate, you’re customers will feel it over time and your business will head south for the winter. Realize that you're becoming a change agent for your business. A daily huddle will change the pace of the game.

The 5-Step Vince Lombardi Outline for a Killer Huddle

Up to this point you've probably been thinking, “Yeah a huddle sounds like a good idea but what the heck do I say?”

You’re in luck. I’m going to give you a template to ensure that your huddles are working right and pushing your team to new levels of awesomeness.

Step #1 - Start Off with Music

Play something that gets people smiling and even dancing if possible. I’ll play something like C&C Music Factory’s song Everybody Dance Now. I’m always surprised at how many accountants start shaking it.

Step #2 - Point Out an Achievement

Share something that has gone really well within the company during the last 24 hours. If you look hard enough, there’s always something to talk about. Never bring up the negative, no matter how dire the circumstances are.

Step #3 – Communicate Value Added Projects

Ask “What are you working on today to make our company better?” This forces your team to stop thinking about their massive inbox and nagging to-do lists. The goal is to help them focus on processes, systems and improvements.

Step #4 – Inject the Collaboration

Ask “Is anyone waiting for something from another member of the team?” This question creates collaboration and reminds people that they’re not working silos.

Step #5 - End with a Challenge for Business Growth

It doesn't matter what it is, but give them something to do or think about.

Here are a few challenges I've given:

  • When you come to our next huddle, I want you to share something about yourself that none of us would have known otherwise.
  • Find one customer today and completely make his or her day by performing a random act of kindness. Then return and report at the next huddle.
  • Write down 3 massive goals you want to achieve during your lifetime.

The huddles will add a whole new layer of community and culture to your company within the next 30 days. My challenge to you is to commit and make them a daily habit.

The end result will be a business that is more efficient and of course…more profitable.

ACTION ITEM: How will you huddle in your company? Leave me a comment and I’ll chime in!
